I missed a stop sign and got a ticket for $200 plus the $85 "handling" fee imposed by NYS. Is this normal dollar amount for Nassau county?

wow! is it that much for a stop sign now? go to court and talk to the DA and ask him to allow you to plead to a lesser charge.

Yeah, in Nassau you usually get to plead down for a lesser fine and points.

If you get a ticket in NYC, don't bother. The judges work for the police department and simply rubber stamp every ticket..no pleading.

True. Most people treat stops signs like yield signs. If it was $500 per offense with no chance for a plea, people might actually stop at them. The same goes for speeding. Even though it says 55 on highways, I would say most people consider the speed limit to be 65-70 and the chances of getting a ticket at these speeds is slim unless you get unlucky.

The fee should be higher. Too many people out there that shouldn't be driving.

Agreed.... Its almost subconscious now.... I go thru' 2 stop signs every day on the way to work, and I never come to a complete halt, unless I see one or more vehicles at the intersection.

So it makes sense to ignore the speed at which traffic travels?
Speed limits are set low. I can prove this because most people drive faster than the posted limit. If the 55 mph sign was correct, people would drive 55. So everyone is wrong and the sign is right?
I find speed enforcement to be mostly fair on LI. Ciops shouldn't write tickets for 65-70mph. That would be stupid. It makes more sense to nab those that travel faster THAN THE NORMAL FLOW OF TRAFFIC. Those are the folks that are dangerous. afterall, everyone else doing 65-70 is simply moving with the flow.

I stop at stop signs so could care less what the fine is. I do not believe stiffer fines=safety though. Just a way for the gov't to line it's pockets. I'm also not a fan of giving cops more power. They have enough, thank you.

Part of the problem is that stop signs have been overused as speed control devices. They are not supposed to be speed control devices, they are supposed to control traffic. I'll never forget Boyle road in Selden when the put stop signs every 3 side streets...of course people will stop paying as much attention to stop signs if you abuse them.

I'm talking about rolling through stop signs, not blowing through them even when you see someone waiting on the other side of a 4 way. That of course is dangerous and stupid. Everybody rolls through stop signs, especially cops.
