I don't like having to contend with a lot of traffic. Nor do I like riding parallel to a major highway/roadway. That being said, can anyone recommend some nice Long Island bike rides?
You can pick it up by the Massapequa Rail Road Station on Sunrise Highway and take it north to Bethpage State Park or take it south to Cedar Creek Park.
I know you said no major roads, but the LIE service road on a sunday morning is perfect. Very wide shoulders and there are always cyclists riding there.

Also, is Trail View State Park paved for riding?
Thanks!
Trail View is not paved . It starts at Haypath Road in Old Bethpage and goes north to Cold Spring Harbor. You have to travel along some highways for a short distance around Plainview. It gets pretty challenging around Northern Pkwy.

Not sure where you are located or how serious you are into cycling, but in suffolk Stony Brook's campus has a nice enclosed bike loop around the entire property. Also there are group rides for various bike groups that take place on SUNY Old Westbury campus. I am on my bike a few times a week and ride the north shore starting in Town of Smithtown. I find that getting out insanely early is the best approach. It is a beautiful ride, but there are still cars of course.
