I am moving back home from Chicago and, as a result, need to drive a moving truck. AAA and google maps both include directions that involve taking the Cross Island Pkwy to get to the LIE... but trucks like what I'll be driving can't use it. Does anyone know how to get to the LIE without driving a truck on a pkwy???
I wouldn't do that anyway...it's probably telling you to take I-95 through NYC...which is the Cross Bronx Expy. This is one of the most congested stretches of road in the US. Also...if you are coming soon, the Throgs Neck Bridge is a mess right now due to a recent fire.
Assuming you are coming in from I-80...take 80 to 280 to I-95 (while still in NJ)...then take I-495 through the Lincoln Tunnel. I-495 becomes the LIE (you'll also go through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel).
You might get some varying responses...but did our move this way and it worked out fine.
Also recommend coming through NYC at night also. Either way...check out this for construction advisories...

If you are coming via the NYS Thruway...I87...you can take I287 when you enter rockland...same as I87...till you cross the Tappen Zee Bridge...follow the 287 signs to I95 South...and when you enter the Bronx look for the Throgs Neck Bridge...Stay in your middle and or left lane on the bridge...and in 5 miles or so...you will run into the LIE exit....good luck
I'd stick with the GWB. Trucks are allowed in the Lincoln Tunnel but it's very tight--the bridge is better.
Also, take the Deegan/Bruckner to the Throgs Neck, not the Cross Bronx; unless it's 3am, this will be faster. That will take you to the Clearview and then to the LIE.
Just remember that the Throgs is still screwed up from the fire. If you are coming in the next few days...just check ahead. Good luck...I made that trip one. Ohio is FLAT!! LOL
