That's not the cops fault its Steve levy who fails to have minimum Manning standards like Nassau PD which mandates every sector county wide must be covered 24/7

Unfortunately, that simply isn't true. Contractually, there are literally hundreds of tours that go unfilled. Hundreds per precinct.

Suffolk County Cops do an excellent job, they just don't have to be paid what they are being paid to do that job. Even a 20% reduction in top pay would still generate thousands of applicants for the a few positions, and you'd be able to have more cops on the street. There just is no better deal for someone without a college degree, or maybe an Associates. 120K a year plus $0 contributed towards pension and health care is a normal pull for an SCPD beat cop after 5 years.

As for the taking a bullet thing, when was the last time SCPD was shot in the line of duty? They are more at risk from traffic accidents than anything. Maybe as years go by this will change as the amount of drugs and gangs increase here, but right now it just isn't the case that being SCPD is a very dangerous job. There is ALWAYS the possibility, yes, but so is there if you work behind the counter at 7 eleven at night.

Loafers? Not in my experience.

Suffolk County Police Dept (http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police/recruitment.htm - broken link)

Nothing towards medical or pension.

They have a separate retirement account they can contribute to in addition to their pension that is basically a non-matched 401K. The teachers have a 403b, I'm assuming it's a similar thing.

The PBA is endorsing Bellone? As much as I'd hate to do it, I have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils in that case.

Bellone has experience negotiating with organized labor, but with the PBA endorsement who knows how he approaches the SCPD when he is trying to close the $128M budget deficit.

If his experience negotiating with labor unions is in the public sector, you mean he has experience giving away the store to organized labor because after all it's the taxpayers' money!

If the PBA endorsed him, you know what they are expecting: raises and perks hand over fist -- deficit and taxpayers be damned.

Right on. The SCPD wants the gravy train to start rolling again. Levy had the balls to stand up to them and they hated him for that, hence they brought out Bellone so he will be their puppet like Gaffney and Halpin.

The average SCPD officer already makes $40k more than the average Long Islander, does not have to pay a single cent towards their own healthcare and dental insurance, and is guaranteed a pension.

At the hall where the democratic results where being announced, Bellone took the stage giving his speech after victory. He thanked the PBA President and made remarks on a win for organized labor. All in the crowd where cheering in hopes of the gravy train returning and think pay raises and continued public spending will march forward.
