Thank you all for your feedback. I have definitely ruled out CSH - it is not a money issue, but I really want to be right off the highway. If there are any other suggestions for towns that are nice and off the highway, that would be appreciated. Otherwise I am still very much interested in feedback on DH schools, etc.

Fort Salonga (Northport) is a very nice area, but unless the house is right by the Sunken Meadow Parkway, a long way from being "right by the highway". The Dix Hills area includes homes close to either the LIE or Northern State Pkwy - more available houses to choose from!

As far as schools go, Half Hollow Hills is generally considered a very good school district and also has excellent special ed classes.

But no "downtown", etc... Comes down to priorities - good luck in your search

I'd prefer Syosset over DH and it's close to the highway.

Parts of Commack are right off the Sunken Meadow.

Parts of South Huntington, like over by St. Anthony's.

Wouldn't the part of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga that is near to the Sunken Meadow Parkway be the part of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga that has a "Kings Park, NY 11754" mailing address and that is in the Town of Smithtown versus the part of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga that has a "Northport, NY 11768" mailing address and that is in the Town of Huntington?

A map of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga in the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown:

St Anthony's is right by the South Huntington/HHH border--in fact, I think Pigeon Hill Road is the line. It's a nice area, but HHH schools are better.

Syosset is a good area, but it is more congested and lots are smaller. Also, taxes are higher--my memory, from when my parents were looking, is that Syosset/Woodbury taxes are particularly steep.

I don't love Dix Hills/HHH (I don't like the way it's pretty much housing developments and nothing else) but it really does have a good location. Its only weak point in that respect is the train, as there's no station.

I like the area right around Round Swamp Road. I know it is Half Hollow Hills schools but I don't know if its Dix Hills, Melville, West Hills or something else. Anyway, it is a beautiful area and is very conveniently located. Its close the LIE, lots of shopping and the CSH train station is just minutes away.

^^ Agreed. Also take a look in Cold Spring Hills. It's a very tight knit community built around the Gold Coast era Oheka estate and its private golf course. Wonderful civic association and a fantastic place to raise kids. Literally 5 minutes to exit 39 on the Northern State Parkway. You can walk to the Cold Spring Harbor train station from many homes.

There are also sections of Cold Spring Harbor that are only a 5-15 minute commute to the NSP (look around Woodbury and Harbor Roads). I have lived in both places for 50 years and have always found it convenient to everything!

CSH and the larger Huntington community is much more "townlike" in feel than Dix Hills.
