I'm moving to Long Island next month and will be working in Hauppauge, NY. Wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a town that is close to work and has character, restaurants, shops, close to the train into Manhattan.I am 31 years old, female looking for a 1 BR apt in a charming part of town-I can do anything from posh to hippie.Someone recommended Huntington but I'm concerned about the 30 min. commute to work.If you are familiar w/ this area can you list options and what the vibe is in each area and approx commute time to Hauppauge (Motor Pkwy). Greatly appreciate any input!!

Oh! And would I need a car or is public transportation doable?

if u arent all the way north in huntington, it wont take u 30 mins to get to motor pkwy. its about 10 mins from exit 49 to 53 on the LIE, depends how far away from there u are. heading east in the morning, u wont hit too much traffic. smithtown is nice too and theres a few bars and stuff there on main st., depending where u are in smithtown it could be a 5-20 min. ride, depending on traffic also.

I just responded to your other post. Check out Port Jefferson. It's an extremely cute town on the water.
