We're currently looking at homes in Northport and have seen two good possibilities. Both homes would require some updating in the coming years, so I want to be sure we're good in terms of location before purchasing anything that we will have to invest in.
One home is in the Valmon Woods section of Northport. Just south of 25A, technicall it's Fort Salonga. One of the streets is called Fox HOllow Riding Road.
The other home is also in Fort Salonga. It's in the neighborhood with streets like Wayne Court, Susan Terrace, etc...
Any thoughts on these areas? Any other suggestions for nice areas in Northport for a family with young kids?
Thanks a lot!

For those who may not be familiar with Fort Salonga
nyc-li, it is important to understand that Fort Salonga is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address, and while places in the Hamlet of Fort Salonga have a "Northport, NY 11768" and "Kings Park, NY 11754" mailing address, no part of Fort Salonga is in either Northport or Kings Park.
For those who may not be familiar with Fort Salonga:
Fort Salonga is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the northeast part of the Town Huntington and partly in the northwest part of the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga in the Towns of Huntington and Smithtown is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Kings Park in the Town of Smithtown; on the south by the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Huntington, by the Hamlet of East Northport in the Town of Huntington; and, on the west by the Village of Northport and the Village of Asharoken in the Town of Huntington.
Fort Salonga is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Fort Salonga have a "Northport, NY 11768" and "Kings Park, NY 11754" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

Overall Northport is a very nice area, schools are good. But housing is expensive, you're looking in high 4's and up. Not sure what your budget is. For more in depth answers, i'm sure there are other posters here that can help.

When checking out places in "Northport" be aware that the Village of Northport has a different border than does the "Northport, NY 11768" ZIP Code postal zone and those places that have a "Northport, NY 11768" mailing address that are not in the Village of Northport are in the Hamlet of Eatons Neck, the Village of Asharoken, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga, the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Centerport.

Both of these neighborhoods are nice. In fact, you really won't find bad neighborhoods in Northport, or any of the surrounding hamlets. The only thing to be aware of in the neighborhoods you're considering is that they can be fairly secluded and not very convenient for kids to walk to the Library, parks, downtown Main St., etc. That isn't necessarily a bad thing - you're getting bigger properties in that area and it's pretty quiet. If you're looking for a more traditional kids playing in the streets neighborhood with everyone hanging out outside, you may want to go a bit west, but the houses/properties will be smaller.
Anyway, as I said - you really can't go wrong in any of the neighborhoods surrounding Northport. There are kids all over this place (some people may consider that a negative), but hey I've got 4 kids myself, and they love the Northport-East Northport school district. If you have any specific questions you'd like me to answer about the area, feel free to send me a PM. I've lived here for 5 years now, kids are aged 5-17, so I can pretty much give you a perspective that runs the gamut of kids experiences.

Both neighborhoods are well kept, fairly upscale, and south of 25a. They are both located in Northport but not in Northport Village. The previous poster is correct- you will need your car to get to the library, schools, etc. However, the Susan Woods neighborhood is within walking distance to an IGA supermarket, CVS, and Chase Bank across Bread and Cheese Hollow Road.
I can tell you more about Susan Woods. The streets are wide, the houses well kept, and the residents are always walking, riding bikes, etc. It seems to be in a transition period. Right now most of the homes are occupied by residents with older children (middle school/high school) and empty nesters. However, there are some families with small children beginning to move in. Most homes in Susan Woods are assigned to the Bellerose Elementary School in East Northport. It looks like a very nice, family-oriented school with a good reputation.
We too looked in both of those neighborhoods. Susan Woods won out because of the courts and that Fox Hollow Ridings Road seemed to have a bit more traffic with people using it as a cut-through to Middleville Road.
Good luck in your search!

kptree, according to the official maps of Suffolk County as published by the Suffolk County Planning Department, the only "Northport" is the Village of Northport; and, as I posted above, places that have a "Northport, NY 11768" mailing address that are not in the Village of Northport are in the Hamlet of Eatons Neck, the Village of Asharoken, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga, the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Centerport.
