For someone who is not in college anymore (full-time working), what are the best options for learning a foreign language....say Spanish or French? I am really interested in learning French (who knows I might want to move to Canada some day!!) and wanted to know what options I have on Long Island.

I am not too sure about the DVD and PC based programs (Rosetta Stone etc) that claim to teach languages, but I am open to all suggestions. Are there any inexpensive classes that one can take here in schools/colleges etc??

I just went back to Suffolk in the summer and continued with my studies this fall. I happen to be doing a french course. Dont know how much one class would set you back. I love french, but think here in the usa, spanish is more useful.

I tried Japanese lessons on CD by Pimsleur. Each lesson is about 30minutes and it teaches you simple phrases. They have a lot of languages available, and I'm pretty sure that they're all the same lesson structure regardless of what language you choose.

I did the lessons in my car on the way to work. Normally people would think I was some crazy guy talking to myself, but nowadays they probably just assume I'm on a handsfree. I bought the starter pack of 10 lessons for under 20$ which I finished and was surprised at how well it worked. I stopped there b/c the entire series (30 lessons I think) was like $250. I just have to pull the trigger and buy it I think. I have seen the Pimsleur sets in Spanish/French/Italian at the library, so you could always try it out for free.
