you should be able to get something decent under 400k in several areas along the south shore with decent commutes. Check out: Seaford, Wantagh, Lynbrook, East Rockaway, Oceanside, Bellmore, Massapequa, Lindenhurst, Babylon, Deer Park.
If commute is important, take a look at the LIRR tables and work backwards from there.
I don't think I want to go that far out if I don't have to. Suffolk just seems far to me. I'm looking for an hour door to door. It takes me about 30 minutes right now.

You gotta be in Western Nassau to do an hour door-to-door. Whoever told you Levittown/Island Trees changed (for the worse, I'm assuming) is nuts - but even there you won't be able to get to work in under an hour from either Hicksville or Wantagh LIRR stations.
Still not sure what your price range is, but Valley Stream and New Hyde Park are the first two that come to mind. Floral Park and Lynbrook are a little more pricey but also fit the bill.
Woodside is on Long Island, last time I looked. Maybe Walter Greenspan can clarify this point ...
Yes, Fastrudy, you are correct: Woodside is on Long Island.
Long Island currently includes, from west to east: Kings County, Queens County, Nassau County and Suffolk County, with the two westernmost counties coterminous with the New York City Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively.
Woodside is a neighborhood in the New York City Borough of Queens.
Colloquially, Long Island, otherwise known as Lawn Guyland, only includes the two counties, Nassau County and Suffolk County, that are east of the New York City line.
1 hr door-to-door commute at 400k is tough. Since you have to walk or drive to the train and then walk 15 from Penn Station to work, you essentially need a train that is 30-some minutes to Penn.
I really think New Hyde Park may be your only viable bet.
1 thing i want to mention is how you get to train stations, most of the stations' parking in Nassau regardless of which line would be full well before 7 am, if you are expecting a leisure 10-minute mornign drive to a station, park then get onto a train, you will be very disappointed, factor that into the commute

That is a factor I forgot about. The amount of parking at such stations. Some are metered as well.
Thank you guys - LOL - I'm glad we clarified woodside is in Long Island. Okay - so I'm clear on this, Levittown is still nice and Hicksville is still nice, correct. They seem to be reasonably priced. How long would the commute be from these places?

Here is the schedule for the Ronkonkoma line. Also keep in mind that not all trains stop at all stations as some are express trains.
MTA LIRR - Ronkonkoma Branch Timetable - Westbound - Monday to Friday except Holidays (http://mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Branch.htm?Folder=Branch&Branch=Ronkonkoma&Directi on=West&Period=Weekdays - broken link)
Also factor in driving time to the station, getting a parking spot if you can. Trust me, people have missed trains because they can't find parking.
