Currently reside in the upper east side but miss living in the suburbs. Looking at apartments in Garden City and wanted some info on the area around stewart ave, and Franklin st. Is this a nice area that is safe similar to living in the upper east side (in the 60's and 70's). I would like a place where I do not worry about my car or walking home from the train station during the winter. Also any information on the 365 stewart apartments would be great. Only looking for short term until we pad a little more cash to buy a house.
For those who may not be familiar with Garden City
upperestside, in case you were not aware, the Village of Garden City has its own police force that reportedly does a good job patrolling in the village.
For those who may not be familiar with Garden City:
Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park.
Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and the Village of Stewart Manor; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address. (The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.)
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
People often mention the ability to walk to the train station. What about the noise from the station? Vibrations? Think I would be annoyed being so close to that.

Reason: update

Depends how close you are. I can walk to the station, but it is several blocks away, so the noise doesn't bother me. It's better not to be right on top of it.
The worst thing is living right next to the railroad tracks, yet the actual station where you get on the train is still too far to walk to. Then there's all the noise and none of the convenience.

GC is not a busy station. It's on the Hempstead Line which is not that busy. Also, the area this person is talking about - while walking distance - is not so close that you would be bothered by train noise.
Thanks all for the post. Glad for assistance especially being that long island has many parts to which you would not want to live. As far as the noise is concerned I have no doubt that it will be much quieter then my current living conditions in manhattan.
365 Stewart Ave looks like it was built in the 50s. It's a brick building, maybe 3-4 floors? There are a few doctors/dentists offices on the ground floor, I was in there years ago and the building looked fine. I drive by there several times a week and from the outside it looks well-maintained. It's in a very safe neighborhood, with million dollar homes 3 blocks away. There's a huge parking lot behind it that serves it and the businesses on Franklin Ave. The walk to the train station is almost half a mile.
Stewart Avenue itself can get quite busy during rush hour, it's a 6 lane road but has a wide island in the middle with loads of big trees, and the building is set back from the main road, again with lots of trees in front of it. Even at its busiest it's much quieter than Manhattan. I often visit a family member who has a ground floor apartment in a building right across Stewart Ave. and have to say that she gets surprisingly little traffic noise.
If you enter the address on Google maps it will give you a single family house to the right of 365. You can spot it easily on the satellite view map, it has a white roof and is shaped like an E without the middle stroke.
