So I moved into my awesome new home at the end of July and My first LIPA bill was 18 bucks since I had it turned on in July. My August bill was like 54. I get todays and it's a whopping $563.00. Ok I knew the big one was coming, I expected it but nothing like that. I called LIPA to ask about it and they explained that they check the meter every even month so they can average the bill out. They said there is a big difference between the first months and the previous month so I was charged the difference in the last total then advised that on the 15th of every even month to check the meter myself and call in the numbers to get a real time bill.
I'm not bummed about it since it seems that last month I got a good deal but electricity seems to be ridiculously high nowadays...are we running out of the stuff or is Al Gore shutting down the switches because a polar bear was seen sunbathing in Miami with her cub?

And they credited your account with the overpaid amount? Did the credit show on the bill? I'd like to know in case I encounter this if I get into a new place.

I receive a LIPA bill every other month. I don't pay a monthly average, so some months my bill s more than others. It works out since it's higher in the summer, when I'm not buying fuel oil, and reverse for the winter.

Our condo is totally electric (heating/CAC also)
As soon as we moved in back in 04 we went on a budget with lipa, and our
bill never went over $265 a month
Now that we put in new systems its actually down to like under $200

Yup, I received the $550 bill too. They said they weren't able to read the meter and allowed too many days to pass, et.

Yep. Just a heads up to you new or about to be new homeowners out there. Your first bills may seem nice but the big one will come. Just be prepared...if it is too good to be true, especially with LIPA..It is. I have gas heat so I expect it to flip soon. Fortunately I haven't run either so far this month.
