The 1st Precinct will now be located on Grand Ave in North Baldwin. Seems like a big step in the right direction.

" Nassau County officials announced Oct. 2 that they have signed a lease with a longtime Baldwin landlord to build a new 1st Precinct headquarters in the Rosen Shopping Center off Grand Avenue. The deal comes after months of negotiations between the county and the landlord.

I heard about this last week on the news. for some reason, people dont want it "in theyre backyard".

You can always find a few people who are against something. The majority of the town is all for it. In any case this should be really good for property values and keeping crime at a very low rate.

The current 1st Pct. is also on a busy commercial street -- Merrick Road. It is on a relatively small lot and is a small building, so to enlarge it, they had to move. It's very old -- 75 years old. How many areas have 75 year old police buildings? The article says that this deal should keep the precinct in Baldwin for at least the next 60 years (hopefully with updates as they go along).

As for the NIMBYism ... people are too much. Grand Avenue is very commercial. There are probably no houses on it in North Baldwin being used as dwellings (not commercial) south of the border with South Hempstead and RVC (don't remember the name of the actual street(s) until down into Baldwin proper south of Merrick Road to my knowledge. But I don't go through there much. Still think NIMBY against a brand new police precinct is nutty.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Baldwin

reggyn, that would be the northern part of Baldwin as there is no "North Baldwin" on the official maps of Nassau County.

For those who may not be familiar with Baldwin:

Baldwin is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southern section of the Town of Hempstead, in the south-central part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Baldwin in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Hempstead and the Hamlet of Uniondale; on the east by the Hamlet of Roosevelt and the Village of Freeport; on the south by the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Oceanside, the Village of Rockville Centre and the Hamlet of South Hempstead.

The Hamlet of Baldwin has a different border than does the "Baldwin, NY 11510" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" address and not be in the Hamlet of Baldwin and a place can be in the Hamlet of Baldwin and have other than a "Baldwin, NY 11510" mailing address): places that have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Baldwin are in the Hamlet of Oceanside, the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor and the Hamlet of Roosevelt; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Baldwin that have an "Oceanside, NY 11572", "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" and "Roosevelt, NY 11575" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

You should see the Garda posts in rural Ireland, some of them look like they date back to Middle Ages. Hell their HQ is a freaking castle ...

It's my understanding that alot of the police facilities in Ireland, the UK, France, etc are frequently very old. Even in London, some of the police stations date back to the Victorian era.

Don't most of Suffolk's stations date back to the creation of the department in 1960? I know the 7th Pct is very new as it was only built in the 1990s, and the new 4th Pct currently under construction, but what about the others?
