To the OP, both Smithtown and Hauppauge are fine choices. Best of luck in your search.
Yes, both are fine choices.

And that area along Old Nichols Road you speak of is indeed Islandia with the school district being Hauppauge. One brand new construction house there is going for close to 600K with taxes near 10K. For that much it better come with its own French maid.

If you were not aware, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) a house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

Hauppauge is an average district, if your child is above average in any way don't expect any kind of encouragement from teachers, accelerated math starts in 4th grade if you're in the "wrong" elementary school all you get is a nasty woman who screams at the kids to get them to drop out and parents are basically complacent. Middle school teachers are 50/50 had a couple of good ones the rest were a waste of time, imagine the advanced science teacher not feeling like teaching and holding "dance-offs" during class time and when you bring it up to the principal she says you need to address it with the teacher first.
