If 54" is longer OR shorter that the standard size tub, its going to cost more. Go figure.

yea standard is 60". 54 it seems is standard size for mobile homes though. my 1930 house has an odd sized bathroom, about 58" x 93" (4'10 x 7'9), so the tub is 54" and theres a 4" extension on the wall at the front of the tub making the space 54"

My house is late 1920's vintage. When we moved in the original Kohler claw foot tub was still in place, with an updated 1950's toilet! I went through the same situation requiring a 54" tub. I ordered mine through Port Jeff Plumbing supply, which I believe may no longer be in business. You could try Blackman, but chances are they'll want a King's ransom for a 54", too.

Water closet is certainly an appropriate description for these tiny, old bathrooms.

I googled a 54" inch tub and the pics that came up were those round old-style ones...is that what you are looking for?

I am of the impression that the OP is looking for the rectangular type of tub, not a clawfoot.
Something like this American Standard on BuyPlumbing.net:

Item SKU: A0138014020 Manufacturer SKU: 011230200 AMERICAN STANDARD 54" STEEL TUB RH WH 0138-0140 $144.49

American Standard - Dealer Results

I ran a dealer search on the American Standard site using my zip code. You can tweak as needed.

I bought pretty much everything from Davis & Warshow when doing renovations. Great pricing. Since, shipping is a major cost and it is best to buy it locally. They are authorized dealer for all brands (Delta, Moen, Am Std) and exclusive dealer for top-ends like: Kohler, Grohe, Duravit, Toto.

Ask for Cristina Beechel in sales. Very nice and helpful. (rare in this business)

Avoid Teri M. in sales at all cost.

One more thing. Time is another major benefit to buy locally. If Home Depot or Lowe's have it online (or other online retailers) but, not in-stock in their LI stores. Then, it is a “custom order” and it will be 8-12 weeks wait (assuming they don’t call you on the 11th weeks to tell you it is delayed for another 8-12 weeks)

Also, consider the shipping cost to return a 400lb cast iron tub even if online retailer accepts return.
