I have gas for cooking, hot water and dryer and oil for baseboard heat. If you have to keep buying refills for propane, its probably not worth it.

Gas lines are only free for 100 feet... that's basically the size of a home. If you need gas lines to be drawn over 10 homes, its going to cost 5 to 10k. So we walked and bought something for about the same price in a different area.

The one downside to gas is most heating systems are hot air which make the whole house dryer. I prefer having baseboard heating but usually that comes with oil. I haven't seen a house yet that had baseboard and gas, though I'm sure it is possible to find it.

My current house has gas heat. The original rooms have radiators (steam) and the additions all have baseboard.
I've had gas hot air and yes, it's dry in the winter. I've had oil because there was no gas within a mile and now gas/hw. While I prefer cooking with gas, I don't like the whole propane thing with a tank outside--just my personal preference.
Guess I prefer my current heating system overall

But I agree, gas heat as such does not add $$ value to the price of a home; however, some people are more comfortable with gas not only because of the cooking, but because they don't want to deal with perceived possible "problems" with oil tanks.
