The Newsday website posted a story from tomorrow's paper. Suffolk's 3rd precinct (Fifth Avenue) has received a grant for seventy license plate readers! These aren't speed cameras. They report the validity of the plates.
---
One story last year from Freeport shows good use. On Sunrise Highway near the high school, there is a reader above each eastbound lane. The camera picked up a "Senior Missing Alert." The geezer (as I am) had driven from Pennsylvania. Within a few blocks, Freeport police pulled over the missing guy.
---
I wish these were added to the Southern State Pkwy.

My question is if they can read the plates, why can't they cross reference insurance at the same time? Too many losers driving around with no insurance, forget the fake plates.

70 license plate readers for your own safety comrade.

How about this, temporary paper tags? automatic pullover, tinted plate cover? automatic pull over.

Some of these temp paper tags are barely hanging on.

I had a brake light out once. Got pulled over, cop explained why he pulled me over, I replaced the bulb. No fuss no muss.

Agree 100%. Unfortunately they won’t do a dang thing about non insurers.

They can. Nassau County Southern State a couple of years ago, I was driving in pretty busy traffic, speed limit right lane and passed a State Trooper on the shoulder. He pulled out, pulled me over and told me my insurance expired the day before. As soon as I got home I called the insurance company and made the payment. If I remember correctly, ticket was dismissed with the proof from the insurance company.

Interesting. Then there should be a much smaller problem of uninsured drivers, and our premiums should be much lower.

They can if they want. I have seen what hap. As the cop sits that thing goes off non stop. They can't catch em all. Lotta poor people driving around dirty. It goes off constantly. They have to pick and choose when to hit the lights.

Statistically impossible. Just like cell phone tickets. Everyone and i mean EVERYONE is on their phones driving. Even grandma. WTH! And the cop as well.

If they pulled over all violators using the scanners our commutes would be 5 hours long to work.

I once got pulled over for a brake light out, on my way to the auto parts store to get a new bulb. NCPD officer let me off with a warning. I got the bulb, replaced it before I even left the parking lot.

Fair enough, why not use the money grubbing traffic cameras to do it? Seems it would be a win, win.
