I was at NSPL yesterday @ SWR HS and I overheard a couple of parents "venting" about the district.

They said that despite the 27% tax levy, the Schools are absolutely crumbling. (Buckets in the halls on rainy days in the Middle School, major mold problem at Briarcliffe elemetary, sup par teachers etc, etc, etc).

Many years ago SWR was the high water mark out here, now it sounds a shadow of its former self (and with oppressively high taxes to boot).

Are their any parents with kids currently in the district that care to weigh in? Or is this just a case of a few McMansioned housewives whining about high taxes on a rainy day now that the LIPA gravy train is gone.

I love the area and have many friends there, but most have kids who either graduated in its golden years or arent enrolled as yet.

For such an affluent community near BNL the schools really ought to be on par with 3V, PJ or Mt Sinai, but theyre not even close.

When is that Levy due to hit? Will it even help?

What's really going on SWR?

Crooks, unfortunately this is a trend in many districts. The schools are being "mismanaged". The teachers really dont care about the students anymore( its just a job to them).I have seen this firsthand happen in my old district(Pat-Med), there are many others going downhill. Long Island schools arn't what they used to be.

Yea maybe.
But these are really specific beefs.

No offense but Pat Med was never really a SWR caliber dist.
Pat med went from fair to awful.
SWR went from outstanding to fair

Are the parents asleep or has the Leisure communities taken them hostage?

agreed that pat-med was fair, but its terrible now. I have 1st hand experience with the teachers and administrators, and they went from caring, to not giving a damn in only a few years. i dont think its the parents, its def the administration. I think if the parents show up at the meetings, and push the issue before its too late, the district has a good chance of getting back on track.

The thing that kills me about PM is that the town has never looked better.

If they got the schools even back to fair that town would be a winner.

I totaly agree with you. I miss living there. I think part of the school problem is the high illegal population.

Let me clarify, the village has never looked better but the district is huge.

Pats gains have been at Meds expense.

Were OT.

Anyone wanna shed some light on SWR?

Not a single parent on this board?

How about a resident?

It's logical. I remember hearing predictions that it would "Go down" after the nuke plant shut down. A 27% tax increase doesn't make up for lost LILCO/LIPA money.
I doubt it's nearly as bad as you think though.

Can't speak to it now, but when I graduated HS 20 years ago (from 3V) my friends at SWR were always going on about the awesome programs they had and the campus looked amazing. Ward Melville wasn't nearly as nice. Their books were new, gym gear was great, great computer programs etc. There was also a huge subsidy paid by LILCO for the Nuke Plant so they seemed to have more money than they knew what to do with. Since it never got to go online, that money left so taxes went up and service has gone down. Didn't realize it got this bad though.
