What specific criticisms of Middle Country do you think warrant its place on your list?

We live in Longwood but send our kids to Catholic. One can get busing to the elementary catholic schools and also to Mercy in Riverhead.
Just my two cents worth.

SWR is better than both, South Manor Eastports fine too.

For the area/money Id be looking at Miller Place- Rocky Point SDs.

Some SDs have better programs than others.
Longwood has awesome sports/cheer. RP has full time K, UPK and strong special ed.ESM is new and has beautiful facilities. MP is small and solid.
SWR although excellent has some drama with high taxes and crumbling schools.I think theyll get it fixed... but at what a cost?

I'd rank the area loosely like this.

Mt Sinai
Miller Place
SWR
Rocky Point
ESM
Longwood
Middle Country
Comsewogue
Riverhead

Crooks
Dear Crooks, Hi. I am brand new to these threads and i have read quite a few posts of yours. You sound very knowledgeable on the different areas of Long Island. We are thinking of moving to Mt. Sinai from Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, the last good area, really, in Brooklyn. We have a 3 yr. old baby boy and we want him to have a better, country life, but not isolated like upstate, ny can be. We also have been living in a house that is almost 100 years old and in constant repair and still no yard to speak of for the baby to play. We wanted something almost New and larger than we are living, 2400 square feet, with no need for any repairs, we think we found something pretty in Mount Sinai, a quiet, private wooded culdesac of 6 homes, built in 2004, right off of North Ocean Ave. CR-83 and canal road, turning off into the culdesac of 6 homes. The only problem is this, it is a Mt. Sinai address with Longwood schools. We have no idea why this can be. I really Love the quiet culdesac and the almost new home with no repairs needed, but my husband wanted Mt. Sinai school district for Teddy to grow up in. He had heard from some people, that Mt. Sinai and Miller Place schools were good and that Longwood school district is bad, with Gordon Heights area attending there. We want the Best for our little boy to grow up in. The real estate woman who is selling the house said there is a petition in that court to have the school district changed to Mt. Sinai, it is a Mt. Sinai address, but she could not say for certain that this will happen. My husband believes the value of the house will be less also because of the school district if we ever want to sell. If there is any way at all that you could Please give me some insight on this, it would be Greatly Appreciated. We do not really know anything about the area, but that it is Beautiful and Beaches and Port Jefferson Villiage are not too far away to enjoy. I really like the house on the quiet culdesac, but i don't know why it would have Longwood Schools. Please can you let me know anything you might think about it and also if there is anything we might be able to do to help change the school district, who we would call, how we could go about it. Thankyou So Very Much. Sincerely, Bernadette.

Longwood gets a bad rap...very undeserved...I went to school there, along with my siblings (one is a surgeon, one nurse one social worker). I taught there for 34 years and had two children attend who are both educators...It is a great district with caring teachers...They have an excellent special education dept providing many services to that population. It's diversity and size is a plus in my book as children live in a big and diverse world! People in the district work hard to maintain a good life. We pass our budgets as education is a priority. Just like any town, there are better residential areas and not so great areas...look around and you will find a great place to raise and educate your family.
