I"m starting this thread to see if I"m way out of line and see if its just me... As a 30 year old caucasian male raised in Oceanside since 2, I have found many jobs and careers around the $400-$600 a week range take home. Now I have also found that just to rent on long island costs average about $1200-$1600 for a piece of crap 1 bedroom. Am I alone? What have your children done differently and are they proof that the American Dream is still alive? I hope your stories are more successful than mine, and that I can learn from or not...... Paying rent since 21 I havn't been able to save much at all and currently ready to snap from the labor of working and working but getting no where... Is Long Island really that great to have a family in?

Not many people in your situation stick around long here, and I can't blame them. If you plan on staying here and supporting yourself, you really need to have a professional degree, a stake in a family business, a big paying Manhattan job...or sign up for the police test.

Sorry, I must have missed where the powers that be promised all of us the good life on $400 a week.

There are dozens of career paths that provide enough earnings to live here in relative comfort. Perhaps you should pursue one of them.

If you didn't move out @ 21 and instead just stayed home with mom & dad and saved money, you would not be where you are now. Just saying. I don't mean to come off harsh, I moved out for the first time @ 26. I bought a place and had a lot of money saved. I do not make a lot of money at my job at all, but b/c i stayed home longer than most was how I am able to survive.
