no, our house is on a 1/4 acre which is large for our neighborhood. The house is big & its centered on the property so the backyard is on the smaller side for my liking. I would never buy anything smaller, I spend way too much time outside & I need the space for my gardens & animals. In Massapequa where I worked for many years at lunch time I would walk around and it always suprised me that people would expand their home to the point of having no backyard left. It seems so weird to me.

depends on your outdoor activity level and needs. Some people barely use their yards. If you simply like to relax outside and the house has a nice deck/patio, etc to use that would be fine. If you like to garden, play sports, etc then a larger yard may be a priority.

Small yard = less maintenance: time and cost.

Agreed, small yard = less maintenance. However, for future re-sale purposes, your house will be more attractive to a family with kids if the yard is decent sized (doesn't have to be an acre or half that). I bought my house because I liked it and it had a big yard for my family.

I guess it depends on how much yard space you think you need. We have a small back yard, standard for Nassau COunty - but it's actually pretty big by our village's standards. We could have a small garden, a swingset, a patio/deck - but probably not all those things at once! However, we have a nice, flat, clear yard which we like. Our next house will have a bigger yard. One problem with a small yard is you better like your neighbors.

We have 2 young kids and a dog so backyard was pretty important to us. We basically bought our house for the nice flat yard. It was pretty hard to find a big yard that didn't have a pool but it was very high on our list.

nope. we were going to extend our small cape but would loose 1/2 of our tiny backyard.

Instead we went for a bigger property where the kids can play outside all the time

great point guys and gals. my wife and i were thinking that the yard thing isnt that important because we will be enjoying the house itself. the resale issue is something to look into. only if i can move the house up because the front yard is a nice size...lol

The property is important if you have young kids-I have learned that the hard way-great area, great house, small/almost no backyard. I'd love a do-over-maybe next spring!
