Growing up in Glen Cove in the 40s there as a big St Banard dog called Butch that became the town mascot. He would roam all over the town and became every ones pet going from house to house for a handout.I recall reading how he some times would get on the train to Jamaca as the conductors all knew him. When he died they tried to get another to take his place but it didnt work.
Then there was Timmy Oneil the motorcycle cop that gave the Russians a traffic ticket, but thats another story
Before my time but I live down the street from the train station.Butch would ride to Oyster Bay for a handout from a butcher then ride back to Glen Street station. After he died they had a metal sign at the station with a short story about Butch's adventures. It was stolen around 1970 but was found in an attic of a house on the south shore about 10 years ago.I think it is now at the Glen Cove library.
