And keep in mind that family medical costs 200-400 a month, if you want to retire you have to put something into 401K..even 5% a year is $7500. That stuff is all 100% free for cops. You can add 15-20K a year on top of that 98K base.

This is correct - and an important point to note is that 15-20k extra is not the sum-total of the cost of their benefits, but the annual cost of the benefits they get that are over and above what the typical private sector employee gets.

Retiring with a 60K a year take at 48, let's say, is basically equivalent to you being handed over 1 million dollars at hiring, and being told "this is yours when you retire". That's where the "lottery ticket" term comes from.
NYPD does require 60 college credits, NCPD, NCSD, SCPD, and SCSO do not. However I believe anyone looking to be promoted past police officer/deputy sheriff in any of the 4 above mentioned agencies must have a college degree of some sort.
OTW home tonight saw 4 more bozos pulled over by the Cops on the LIE. One in particular was bobbing and weaving thru traffic like a Danica Patrick wannabe. About a mile up he too was pulled over and being admonished by the cops.

Please keep this thread on topic so it does not turn into another (yes, still another ) cop bashing tirade . I didn't want to delete it because I believe that the premise of the OP is both interesting and valuable.
Thanks. nancy

Doesn't say that here Suffolk County Police Dept (http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police/recruitment.htm - broken link)
But I thought I did see it somewhere (NYPD or NCPD, maybe?) that they want 60 credits, so you need a 2 year degree in criminal justice from Suffolk or Nassau CC now. Everyone can make their own judgements on that.
It should. my friend wants to be a cop and they told him he needed college credits.
