Heroin is all around us on Long Island. I have spoken to my school district about a workshop for parents on how to spot the signs of use and having the DEA come in to talk to the students about the dangers of heroin use. I'm hopeful.

Seaford/Mass was one of the first south shore towns to see a problem. I think the girl found dead in her friends garage 2 years ago was a student in Seaford.

I wonder why it's a systematic problem in that area.

I think it's a clique high school thing. Heroin is pretty big in Smithtown too, and it's not like there's any significant demographic difference between Smithtown and Sayville, for instance. I think one small group of kids gets into it, and then you have a dozen or so addicts, where in Sayville let's say you have..one. It becomes a snowball effect. All that it takes is 6 or so people taking regularly for you to have a few od's per year....od's are just par for the course.
I doubt it. I once asked for crime report for my community and they gave me a really hard time; talk to Capt. X at HQ in Yaphank and then Capt. X told me to speak to so and so at the 3rd Pct. and I eventually gave up when the guy at the 3rd Pct. told me that "they don't keep statistics for the individual communities but rather only for the Pct in general" which I think is pure bullcrap.
