Considering the size of the tree you mentioned, most likely your deductible is as much or more than the cost of removal and even if it isn't, I'd like to suggest NOT to file a claim for something this "minor". Save that for something big - insurance companies are just looking for reasons to increase your premiums and/or drop you at renewal time.

If you do (or have it done) just cut up the tree and leave the wood, make sure it's away from the house.

Hi Elke, thanks for the advice. I think I'll get my friends chainsaw and cut it all up and put it in the backyard.

If you have a neighbor with a fireplace, they'll most likely jump at the opportunity to take the logs! If none of your neighbors has a fireplace, you can post flyers on local trees or post in your local freecycle.org chapter, craigslist or other free sites. Decaying logs attract insects, etc. and after a while they don't look very nice anymore (happened to me ).

It's been my experience that only bundled branches, cut no longer than 4", are picked up when they have regular yard item p/u.
