I am a nursing student on long island that will be commuting to Manhattan to complete my preceptorship and degree. I was wondering what will be the cheapest & quickest route to take into the city. I will be traveling to Memorial Sloan Kettering and need to be on the unit by 7am. Map quest suggests taking the LIE through the midtown tunnel and this seems to be the best route on paper but considering my student financial status I was wondering if anyone had any creative alternatives. I figure I will have to leave my home by 5am anyhow and am hoping to beat most of the morning commute.
Do you have free or reduced parking available ? If not then you will have to review your student financial status before you embark on this stuff. Is this a one time thing ?
Take the train. Parking is a pain in most of the city.
Good luck with the preceptorship.
Actually, taking the train is a terrible idea.
The part of the city that you need to go to is most easily accessible by the 59th St. Bridge. Many hospitals offer free parking (or at least discounted) to their students - look into this.
If you take the train, you'll have to find a way from Penn Station up to 67th and first ave. The best way to do this is take the 6 train to hunter college and walk. That means 2 subways (the 6 train doesn't stop at penn station, so you'll need to take the E train to 53rd to get the 6) from penn station, plus a 10 minute walk. All in all, you'd have to purchase a LIRR monthly ticket as well as a metrocard. Not only is that expensive, but the train is inconvenient. At the time of the morning in which you'll be driving, there will be minimal traffic.
Where specifically will you be commuting from? That may make a difference as well.
take the train. youll probably spend twice the train ticket on gas.
