Hi everyone,

I need some advice. I plan on meeting people in the city in April and I will be driving in with a bunch of people. If I have dinner reservations for 7 pm what time do I have to leave by? I am not sure of traffic at this time.
The people I am going with get off work at 5 pm, they have to head home, shower etc..... We are coming from Merrick.

Thank you

Default Weekday or weekend?

Assuming weekday, you'd be going thru the Queens Midtown Tunnel and heading north west and parking in the theater area. You'd have to leave enough time to navigate the Southern State/Cross Island/LIE combo into the tunnel then midtown traffic and when you got out of the tunnel you'd be crossing paths on the streets with those who are heading in the other direction to get home.

I don't really know the mileages but I'm guessing Merrick is something like 25 miles from the tunnel

Probably should plan an hour into the tunnel and at least a half hour to the parking lot in the theater area--might want to leave 2 hours in advance

These people get off work, have to go home and get ready, and THEN you are going to leave? You're not going to make a 7 p.m. reservation.

oh I forgot to mention it is on a Friday night.

So maybe an 8 pm res. will be okay. It has been so many years that I've been to the city by car, I forgot about what a challenge it is.

Correct. Add rain or an accident to the equation and it will be worse.

Dont assume that because you are going against rush hour traffic will be lighter. Also, if you get to the tunnel during that time they usually have more lanes coming out of Manhattan open than going in. I would say you need two hours to be safe, why not just move the reservation to 8:00?

Yeah, I have to drive this way for work all the time. Sometimes the traffic going into the city is just as bad as going out to the island, sometimes worse. Friday evening rush hour is also pretty much the worst time to be on the road anywhere in NYC.

If you leave 2 hours in advance you'll definitely be safe. Worse comes to worst you get there real quick, find a good parking spot and get to walk around and take in the sights for awhile before dinner.

Friday night -- OUCH!

8 PM reservation is the way to go and leave yourself at least 2 hours to get in from Merrick and park -- to play it safe.

Also -- make reservations at one of the parking garages. I use Icon parking and they have a coupon for M-F if you arrive after 6!

I use the Astor Parking Icon garage which is accessible from 44th or 45th St between 8th and Broadway (right by the Marriot Marquis off Little Schubert Alley)

Thank you everyone for your advice.

8 pm it is. Thank you Ohbeehave for the link. I am sure that will come in handy!

And thank goodness for navigation.

I know I was asking this question early, the group wants to reserve a party room and needed everyones input on getting there on time.

why don't you just take the train? I mean, do you HAVE to drive? Train might just be easier IMO. I don't know where in Times Square you are going to park that doesn't cost you an arm & leg.

Jdawg8181 -- Yes, we have to drive. I know the train would be easier.
We also have 2 sets of parents that are going and they are up there in their years. So the driving would be better for them, but hell for me and the rest of the group. It's all good though.
