whats real BS is the cops already made three arrest in the Seymor Phillip Hoffman drug related death. If it was your kid or mine do you think they would have acted the same way? Oh thats right he was a special celebrity. our society is whacked and so is SPH
part of the reason why parents keep their kids active in everything they possibly can - and why you can't blindly fault the "helicopter" parents. It's easy to make fun. Look how many people think the war on drugs is a waste of time.
Heroin is just the next 'drug of the week'. Remember the crack epidemic? Cocaine in the 70's/80's? Ecstasy/club drugs in the late 90s? It will be something else years down the pike. A sad, sad trend that dosent ever seem to end.

HUH??? This is going on in middle to upper class neighborhoods. There wasnt rampant crack use around here.
Whenever you have hoards of bored teens with not much to do then you're gonna get inflated levels of youth drug-use, suicide and depression. You're also raising a very sheltered individual..
The suburbs are a failed experiment and America is slowly starting to realize that.
LI can't change the fact that it's endless suburbs; the damage has been done... but the places deeper on the island could at least alter themselves to be more young adult friendly. Which means redeveloping downtowns/main streets to give them life, increasing walkability and providing young adults a place to live so they're only options aren't leaving the island or staying in an overpriced illegal basement apartment.

the war on drugs IS a waste of time and money. its being lost every day. its a parents responsibilty to educate their children about drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. personally I beleive smoking marajuana is far safer than drinking alcohol. we all know cigs are gonna kill you. Why aren't alcohol and cigarettes banned? its all about the money going to the politicians. you have to explain to your kids whats going to kill them and what isn't. If your kid gets hooked on anything its on you.

What the hell are you talking about? Are you saying the inner city slums are the place to be? I bet you were high when you wrote this nonsense.

This is comical at best.
First of all, who says the suburbs are a failed experiment? I only hear that from you and some posters in the Urban Planning CD forum. Long Island is unique in that it's not like a lot of the cookie cutter suburbs you find in many other places, where the only thing to do is shop at WalMart. Seriously, stop painting the suburbs with a broad brush.
Honestly, I would never send my kids to NYC, DC, or CHI schools.
Also, what does providing young adults with housing have to do with teen heroin use?

Long Island IS like the other suburbs in the country.
Yes, there is variation in the style of homes (hi ranch, cape, splanch, ranch, etc) but other than that it's no different from some generic sprawl outside of Kansas City.
Long Island suburbs are just as bland. First of all, half of the towns on Long Island have zero or a very negligable-sized commercial area. As for the other half that do, the only thing that exists are generic chain stores/food places, gas stations and maybe a few banks/offices.

Contrary to popular belief of most Long Islanders, not everywhere outside of the suburbs is an inner-city ghetto.
For your information, the outer portions of city's not only offer suburban-like density, [usually] good schools, much lower taxes but also reasonable conveniences and activities (which would also help keep your kids from jamming needles up their arms). As well as [generally] maintaining strong property values.
