Hi how can I find people who are doing this (leaving from Cold Spring Harbor or Oyster Bay) and see if they have any extra spaces available? If I did myself, where would I dock my boat on Long Island or in Stamford. Any leads would be great! Thanks!

Hi. I have a 40' sport fish (Trojan) and am thinking of starting this over the summer. If I can get at least 10 people at $30 round trip per day, I can do it. That would include a cocktail or beer on the way home.

Do they allow that type of commercial operation, or will they shut you down if they figure it out?

The trip would take a little less than an hour, but most of that time is in the harbors. This would not be a commercial operation. It would be a hobby and another reason for me to get out on the boat.

I doubt the Coast Guard will be thinking of it as a "hobby". Years ago, during a subway or rail strike, a friend of mine who knew a tugboat operator was hitching a rid on the tug, along with other people, from Brooklyn to Manhattan. The tug operator wasn't charging, he was doing it as a favor. Coast Guard shut him down even though he did have enough life preservers for his handful of passengers.

I believe you are not allowed to run a charter operation without a CG license. Although if they catch you, Im not so sure what the penalty could be...perhaps just tell you to stop.

I think people find the old threads using search engines like google, and when you open an old thread there's a message at the bottom that encourages the person to post in the old thread.

On Edit: Just clicked one of the 'related threads' below and at the bottom it said 'Please update this thread with any new information or opinions. This open thread is still read by thousands of people, so we encourage additional points of view'
