and back on topic before i get us all thrown out of here...
i said earlier 'it's home' and it is...
but i also work in nyc and am locked into a job with a state pension. so to move anywhere where i can still get to work, i wouldn't gain anything... i'd only lose, since i bought my house back in 94
I was thinking the same thing...we'd getter get back on topic or we're going to get yelled at...
I may as well say why I'm leaving. Long Island has been good to me but my list of reasons to move is a mile long. Here are some:
My oldest son has depression and anxiety issues. He's very smart but prone to panic attacks. He wants to get a job in the gaming industry. The gaming industry is concentrated in NC, TX, CA, and WA. He'd never be able to work in Manhattan anyway because it would be sensory overload for him. He has panic attack when he's in a crowded, loud situation. Even a trip to the mall is very hard for him.
I just can't afford it anymore. When I bought my house in 1999 my taxes were just under $5K. Now they're close to $11K and that's with the STAR 'discount'.
My kids will never be able to afford it here either and I don't have the money to give them for a down payment on property here.
The weather plays a small part. I know technology isn't going anywere and nor do I want it to but a downside to it is kids stay inside more. I want to live somewhere where the weather is a bit better so I can get them out of the house more.
My youngest child has special needs and needs alot more attention from us. Here we're always working and stressed. He's not getting half the attention he needs.
Another small reason as I don't know if I can even talk my father into moving. He's 83 and lives alone in Florida (my mom passed away 4 years ago). So far he's still healthy but obviously that can change at any moment given his age. There's no way I can encourage him to come back to NY and deal with all the snow and cold weather. As I said, he's still healthy but he's still 83. He's frail and couldn't handle walking through snow and on ice. So I'm hoping maybe I can get him to move to NC.
What else...oh back to the money issue, I'll be able to buy a house in NC in all cash (and still have money leftover) from the profit on my current house.
As we all know, NY (Long Island and Manhattan) is a 'rat race' type of atmosphere. I want to live in a slower paced place, mainly for my oldest son. I think it'll be better for his mental state.
There's more but I have to get back to work now...
An island can never be a place to stay any length of time. It's like a sentence to be on LI and the first thought is how and how quick do you get to escape back to the USA, to the mainland where you're on solid ground and not surrounded by water.
I notice that people who grew up on LI are used to that but the rest of us know better.
I will know what my plans are within 2 years. When I have a total net equity and cash of $200K I will then sit down and compare buying here on LI with increasing yearly taxes or being mortgage free elsewhere, but also taking a pay cut. Until then I just go week by week and enjyoing whats here.
We left for several reasons. Husband is 10 years older and facing retirement, but we still have relatively young kids. Just looked down the road and saw no end to taxes. We could technically afford our house on paper, but the taxes were just getting out of control. I gave my husband an ultimatum--he could retire early in NC and I would continue to work (teacher-private school on LI-so pay cut wasn't an issue). I told him if he wanted to swing a hammer (he was in construction) til he was seventy he could do it up on LI or be house husband in NC. He could never see living anywhere but LI but saw that to even stay in our house with no mortgage (and that wouldn't happen for years) it would be over $1,000 a month just in taxes. We left with no jobs but able to buy house outright. I got a job as a teacher making more than in private school on LI and he LOVES it down here. First of all he was able to retire, and loves the weather. No more snow shoveling! Our oldest was going into high school so wanted to move before he settled in up on LI. All 3 kids love it down here. Went back at Christmas to visit and they all agree would never go back. The weather is great, they are outside all day. It was easier for us because he was self employed and could work if he had to down here and I was lucky to get a job right away. Also owning your house is key along with lower taxes and overall lower cost of living.

that is what is killing me, all this money goes on taxes, and we don't see any being used for our towns or schools. roads are ruined, schools are, well in my opinion, mediocre at best..
the idea of my kids one day saying i am an LI-er makes me cringe

The gaming industry may be coming to LI soon ...
I would strongly advise a "behind the scenes" position (excluding security) in gaming if he has a panic attack in a crowded, loud situation, as that is exactly what casino floors are like ... even more stressful for the employee since they know the "eye in the sky" is watching and evaluating their every move ...

Oh no, not that kind of gaming. I mean computer programing type of gaming jobs as in companies like Epic Games (which has a large office in Cary, NC). My son could NEVER work in a casino, that's for sure. That would be a recipe for disaster!!!
