That's such an exaggeration. East Meadow is not bad at all.

Oh let me rephrase, "it's one of the cheapest places in Nassau I'd actually suggest someone move to".
FWIW, for similar properties, places like Roosevelt and Hempstead aren't even that much cheaper.

I'm not from Wantagh, I grew up in Freeport. So I don't really know the surrounding areas too well. I've actually never driven through East Meadow really...even though it is right by me.

A map of the Hamlet of East Meadow in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/East-meadow-ny-map.gif (broken link)
The Hamlet of East Meadow has a different border than does the "East Meadow, NY 11554" ZIP Code postal zone (a place can be in the Hamlet of East Meadow and have other than an "East Meadow, NY 11554" mailing address): a few places in the Hamlet of East Meadow that have a "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address.

I have been in East Meadow for 15 years and have 3 children. It is a large town population wise may be the largest in Nassau. Demographics have changed a bit but if you read the papers so has every other town on the Island. I personally think that when they built the Walmart that it had something to do with it. We have the biggest park in Nassau and I believe the best basball softball program around. Schools are rated ok not the best not the worst. I think that if you give your kids structure at home with school and homework and don't rely on the teachers 100% to do it all then your kids will do fine. This is almost for any school. Crime wise we have our share but nothing earth shattering. Lots of traffic on Hempstead Turnpike, centered for everything and not to bad to commute easy to get to the highways. Would I buy here again not sure but that is due to a personel preference of wanting to move up to Orange County.

Something to consider in East Meadow - there's a nasty plume in East Meadow down by the southern state due to a dry cleaners. I'm not sure how one would go about researching this, but I'd certainly try to check it out.

In Nassau I don't know any people who heat with propane tanks. Actually on all of LI, I doubt many people do, except if there are a few leftovers from when the homes were summer cottages only. I think we get too cold here for propane heat to be a viable option compared to oil deiliveries or gas from National Grid. Do you come from the south or something? The current heating system in your house is most likely oil and you can't substitute propane for oil.
Ask the others on your new street if they want gas too. You might just be able to find enough people. Gas is good because you never have to schedule deliveries, etc.
If you want to heat with natural gas, you will get gas piped in from National Grid (provided they install the pipeline). I doubt propane will work with that system either.

Just spoke with Keyspan last week regarding a gas line to a home in Old Bethpage. The nearest line is 1500 ft away and they quoted approx $3600 to bring it to the house. Then the homeowner must have a plumber finish the job.
I have heard about asking neighbors and getting it at a discount of for free.
As for a propane tank, I have only seen that used for cooking and not for heating an entire house. I cannot imagine what that would involve.

Just as an fyi - My family and I moved to East Meadow in June 09. I love it thus far and have heard nothing but good about the schools from neighbors - esp. the elem school we are by, Barnum Woods. My son is only 18 mos old, so we will see however, there's always lots of activities going on here, and being near to the parks, shopping, the museum etc. Everyone around is nice but also you don't feel like they're all in your business all the time either.
And believe me, Hempstead Tpke and Front Street ARE NOT BAD..I can't imagine what people are seeing other than being blinded by racial prejudice. There are lots of professional buildings over there and I've never clutched my purse or turned my ring, like I used to on the NYC subways, unless I'm not delving into some ghettos that others are walking into. Certainly no crack smoking in alleyways, lol.
As far as prices, they have dropped significantly since we started looking but they are certainly not the cheapest in long island for comparable houses/land.
We looked a lot before buying and we fell in love with our area. It had a very nice home-y feeling.
