I thought the rear sides could be any darkness too... oops.

I got mine done all around except front windshield to 35% and you can still see me through the window during the daytime. The windshield lets in enough to compensate... but I make it a habit to roll down my front sides if I see a cop ahead just in case. Kinda pointless if the rear sides are illegal too.

tinting is not illegal. just the type and shade you put on.

there are certain levels of tint out there. its been years since I applied them but theres something like 35, 30, 5. 35 is the legal shade but the sad part of it is when you apply the tint, it becomes illegal because every piece that comes out of the factory is a 7% tint in the glass and when you apply 35% tint on it becomes 28% thus making it illegal. 30% is the law.

the rear sides are legal, if they are not attached to a door. for instance, a monte carlo, cutlass or a mustang are all 2 door cars. they all have 2 rear seat windows, not attached to a window. they can be tinted as dark as they want. now, if it were on a 4 door caddy, carpice or a nissan maxima with 4 doors, it would illegal.

this is done for the officers protection. they need to see what is going in the backseat when approaching a vehicle and if the tint is too dark, they wont be able to see if the backseat driver has a gone or not.

^ now that you bring it up, I actually see a lot of cars from factory (or dealer) with the rear climate or privacy package where the rear doors are tinted pretty dark. These include run of the mill minivans and SUVs.

Sorta funny story... I was stopped (not for tint) by a cop and my wife had her jacket hung up in the rear seat driver's side to shade our sleeping infants (tint wasn't enough)... as the officer walked up he screamed for me to roll down the rear window and remove the jacket as he was ready to draw his gun. He could've probably ticketed me for the rear tint but didn't.
