Along the same theme of registration renewal fees, I recently went to renew my license and was a bit stunned to hear the fee is now $80. Isn't this very high? I understand increases over time but it seems like things here skyrocket instead of just go up a little.

Yes there is a tax on it. I think it has to do with the MTA, regardless of whether you ride the rails or not.

2 years apart for renewing registration on my 2 mid-size SUVs... one cost $173 recently while the older one (now due soon) cost $85 in 2008... both are for 2 years. Not sure how it is calculated but that's quite the hike.

I was talking about my driver's license renewal, not my car registration renewal (although my car registration renewal fees seem to be quite high lately as well).

License renews for 10 years though, doesn't it?

Get used to it. It's NY, people.

They reduced it to 8 years. (I got my renewal notification recently as a matter of fact.)

I wonder if they will refund your estate if you "don't make" eight years

I wonder how that works too. I'm moving out of state this summer and will obviously have to get another license. It would suck if I just paid $80 for 4 months! I also have to renew one of my car registrations and wonder about that as well. Oh well, it is what it is (or rather it will be what it will be).

I do know that it went up from $50 to $80. My license actually expired last May and I only recently renewed it. So the form I handed in at the DMV was old and said $50. The guy at the window said it went up to $80 in September.

For that kind of money they should have professional photographers taking our pictures at the DMV so that we have flattering pics of us on our license.
