Cops' contract to pay $108G for 6 years on job

Steve Levy calls the contract "totally unjustified".

I agree. With unemployment the way it is, LIers losing jobs or taking pay cuts to keep jobs, how the SCPD can justify these raises is beyond me.

So the base salary of an SCPD cop is now $109k per year (108 and change). After the holiday time, shift differential and any overtime, this is going to push the median salary of a SCPD cop to around $150k a year.

When will enough be enough?

It will be enough when the middle class is destroyed on LI and all that is left is the rich and the illegals.

the police unions always whine that they need the salaries to live on LI but their salaries are one of the main reasons it's so expensive to live here. What a set of Moderator cut: language asking for a 6% raise each year for three years. Greedy beyond belief. If this keeps up there will be nothing but illegals here, then they will finally be earning that salary

From what I read in Newsday, it was awarded through arbitration. Is it the truth that arbitration with the police unions just means splitting the difference between what the union wants, and what the gov't is willing to pay? So, if the county was willing to go to $90K, and the union wanted $128K, they'd automatically get $109K?

I don't think it's that simple ...

According to the news story quoted in the thread below, public school teachers (example = Mineola) are currently getting 3.5% annual raises plus 2.5% step raises annually, so they have to keep up with the Jones of LI public employees, don't they? The cops are just getting the same as other powerful LI union members do. In that context, they are not doing anything "wrong."

//www.city-data.com/forum/long-...l-closing.html

As for LI becoming only illegal aliens and the rich: if that were to happen I guess the paychecks and pension checks would bounce, as the rich have all kinds of benefactors and cronies in government to keep their property tax rate artificially lower than that for a middle class home and will scream bloody murder if they actually have to pay more in terms of rate than the middle class homes do instead of less. As for the slumlords who house the illegals, they probably just will continue to rent to them and stop paying property taxes if they get too high and when the municipalities take the houses for unpaid taxes, will simply tear the boards off the doors and windows and continue to keep illegals in there. Looks like a great future for LI (provided this actually were to happen).

agreed. I read that several school districts (Lindenhurst was one) gave teachers the option to accept lower increases , and that would protect newer teachers from layoffs. Naturally the teachers voted against it. Big surprise.

Whats up with certain members of the Suffolk County Legislature ALWAYS spouting the PBA line?

How can we complain to our legislators if it's plainly obvious that certain members are in cahoots with the PBA? Thank god Tom Barraga has integrity unlike Jack Eddington and Ricardo Montano.

Unfreakin believable. Now this really hits a nerve.

Default Complaining about this is a JOKE.

You people complaining about this AGAIN just kill me.

Facts:

1. Police haven't had a raise in three years, since the old contract expired. This is why they are getting a big increase all at once, and why there will be back pay when officers retire. You try working for three years without a raise. You try accepting "lags" in your paychecks.

2. Starting salaries have dropped to $42,000. That is a drop of $16,000. The lower salaries will result in a savings of $1.5 million. People on this board have been WHINING about starting salaries as long as I've been a C-D member. So, you got what you wanted. Yet you complain.

3. The yearly increases are 3.5%. That is basically a cost of living adjustment.

4. If you're out injured, you don't accrue any vacation or sick time, and you don't get a uniform allowance. Not even civilians in the corporate world make that concession on sick leave and vacation. When I was out for three weeks after surgery, I still accrued time.

And then this contract expires after one year, and all of this negotiating will happen again.

But some people are going to complain no matter what, because some people are just malcontents.

[mod] rude and uncalled for [/mod]
I could not possibly care less what the uninformed, uneducated masses think. You're complaining just to complain, because most of what I've just said is right in the Newsday article, but you've oh, SO carefully neglected to mention it. Even when you get what you want, you still [mod] vulgar language removed [/mod], and frankly, it only demonstrates that you have an axe to grind that goes far beyond paying taxes. Sorry, can't help you with your misery there.
