Tire Rack is great. I have used them the last few times when mavis did not have the tires I was looking for. You can also read customer reviews of tires on the web site, which is a must so you don't get stuck with a real crap tire. Even reputed brands sell bad tires. Even if buying tires locally Tire Rack is a great resource to research tires.
Typical cost to ship 4 tires to LI is about 40 bucks, though you do not pay sales tax on the tires since they ship from DE. Mounting costs at the local shop varies on the size and aspect ratio of the tire.
do not "cheap" out on tires, you do not have to break the bank but please do not put yourself and your family/friends into a car with crap tires. Sumimoto, Kuhmo, Cooper, General are just some of the companies that make very decent tires at reasonable prices. If cost is a concern, stay away from goodyear and michelin as they cost more but whatever you do, Do not buy used tires either. Put cheap fuel in your car, fine, cheaper oil, fine, crap windshield wipers....fine your choice. A bad tire can cause an accident that can affect the life of many....don't make a choice that your will regret later down the road. I personally run both summer and winter tires but I value my wife and kid a whole lot!
We just had to get new tires for BOTH cars. Used Mavis on Larkfield for the compact car and Sabia's on 25A for the crossover since we were already there for service. Joe Sabia got us a really good deal on some Michelin tires--beating Costco prices installed--and also came highly recommended from several ppl.

Thanks for the info. I agree with you. I have already looked up consumer reports on tires. I am definetly not looking to just get the cheapest things out there. If I put a crappy tire on my car I am only going to have to replace them that much sooner and end up spending more money in the long run. I just want a place that will not rake me over the coals and do not have inflated prices.
I had a very bad experience with Pep Boys in Commack. They told me that I was in need of back breaks very badly. Turns out they lied and my back brakes are still good over a year later. I do not like being taken advantage of. When it comes to car care I am very leary.
