We are in the Town of Huntington. We went to buy a lawnmower and then realized hey, where are we going to store this thing? We only have a 1 car garage and I like to park my car in there. If I get a cheap shed like at Home Depot or something am I going to get in trouble?

Check with your town's building dept. to see what the limitations are before you buy one.

Generally a small shed should be ok, but as NYTom said, check with the town. Also find out from the town how far from the edge of the property has to be.

I think 8x8 is a free-O most places.
Foundation factors in too, cement poured I think is mandatory permit any size/type shed. Then again, I'm an idiot, so don't listen to anything I say.

From town website:
Sheds
Q. Is a building permit required for a shed?
A. For residential property, one shed up to 100 square feet (10' x 10") is exempt from the permit requirement. Permits are required for more than one shed on the property and for a shed over 100 square feet.
Q. What are the requirements for getting a building permit for a shed?
A. Complete the building permit application, and include four copies of your survey and four copies of the shed plans (or manufacturer's drawings). A site plan may be requested as well.
Q. What are the setbacks for a shed?
A. First, no accessory structure can be located in front of the house, including corner lots. For a shed under than 200 square feet (e.g. 10' x 20'), a two-foot side or rear yard setback is required in all residential zones. If the shed is 200 square feet or larger, in the R-5, R-7 and R-10 zones the setbacks are still 2 feet. In the R-15, R-20 R-40 and R-80 zones, a shed 200 square feet or larger must be at least 10 feet for a side or rear lot line.
Q. Is a shed a temporary structure if it has no foundation?
A. No. The Life Safety Code provides that a "temporary structure" may remain for only 180 days. However, a shed less than 144 square feet does not require a footing or foundation. As explained above, a permit is required for a shed over 100 square feet..
Q. Will my shed increase my taxes?
A. All questions regarding the property assessment should be addressed to the Office of the Assessor (631) 351-3226

Been looking at homes in the Town of Huntington for almost a year now and I can vouch that the code is 10x10 without a permit. Anything larger, needs a CO and permits, etc.
