where do you guys take your kids to when you have a few days in hand. i wanted to take my kids somewhere for spring break. we can't do indoor waterparks, and that seems to be my only options in PA. what about neighboring states? do you have any recommendations for rhode island, connecticut, jersey, or PA? it would be just me and my kids (5 yrs), so something like family resort/hotel, something nice, walking, sightseeing etc. no flying. just driving. thanks a lot
I've always wanted to visit Mohonk, I just can't justify paying those prices to stay there, though. People I know who have say the food stinks and the rooms are damp and uncomfortable, but the place sure looks great.

You can pay to hike their land (think it's like $10 or $20, least it was when I was up that way about 2 years ago). The place is built into the mountain, of course it will be damp - but it's not like you are sleeping on rock ledges. I agree on the price issue - if I'm going to pay those prices, then I'm staying at the Four Seasons.
Stay at a B&B. If you're a foodie, head over to the CIA - Culinary Institute of America for some good eats. Though, you must make reservations for lunch or dinner. It can be a tad pricey, but food is fantastic. The FDR museum is right down the road in Hyde Park. A couple of nearby wineries, okay wines, nothing like California wines. Other than that, not much to do in Poughkeepsie.

Seriously, $600 a night for bad wallpaper? How great a hotel in NYC can you get on Hotwire for travelocity for that much?

I think I'll do just that when I go up to visit relatives.
Poughkeepsie is a dump, but Dutchess county north of there is also beautiful.

The CIA is not open on weekends, at least for restaurants.
Up in Dutchess, horse country - it is beautiful. Hop on the Taconic or take the local roads.
No TV up at the Mohonk - expensive as hell, but worth every penny for the romantic types. Great hiking and rock-climbing up at the Gunks.
Thankfully.
Kids week is a blast...went last year.
