One side of my roof has turned icky black. Any recommendations on who to hire to clean the roof, what the expense is, and how this can be prevented in the future?

Thanks!

(I don't want to go up there!)

Where are you located and your best bet is to take a picture and bring it to a building supply store and ask the experts ( Tamko , Nassau Suffolk Lumber , Riverhead Building ) really depends on where you live

I'm in Western Nassau. I'll try to post a pic later today - but it seems to be the generic black streaking I tend to see a lot.

There's Riverhead Building on Rosyln Rd and Rte 25 , Kamco on the LIE service Rd (westbound) exit 43 , Nassau Suffolk Lumber in Roslyn , Locust Valley . I know what you are talking about and i feel it's more of a stain than dirt , not sure if it's coming from the tar strip on the shingle or the tar paper

Try spraying a 25% bleach solution and wait a few weeks. It will change the ph of the surface and kill any mold or moss growth. Do NOT powerwash.....
