By train- either from Jamaica or Woodside?? Anybody do this on a regular basis. My husband is being relocated and we are looking into the Hicksville area. Wondering how the commute is from there. Can anyone reccommend any other towns that are convenient to the LIRR and have affordable real estate available. (i.e. starter type homes in the 400k range) We plan on renting for awhile but eventually want to buy a home. Thanks for any advice.

I currently commute from Bellmore (South Shore) into Manhattan. An Express train gets me into Penn Station in about 45 minutes...for Woodside or Jamaica, you're looking at 35-40 minutes (not bad at all)...go to the LIRR website and check out the various times from different locales...also the South Shore is a nice area, pricey in some places, but check out the Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, East Meadow area.

Any town that provides train service to Jamaica station should be acceptable if your concern is commute.

I commute from Valley Stream (South shore) to the Hunter's Point near LIC. Door to Door is about 30 minutes door to door, depending upon the wait for the train.

Most (Hicksville) trains commute to the Jamaica station allowing a transfer to Hunter's Point or Long Island City. What I've found is the trains from/to Long Island City / Hunter's Point, don't run as often off peak. This might be worth considering if your husband has irregular hours or overtime requirements.

A backup plan is the IRT 7 line from Woodside which will allow you to connect to the LIRR train from Woodside to Jamaica.

Good Luck on your search
