Any town that provides train service to Jamaica station should be acceptable if your concern is commute.
I commute from Valley Stream (South shore) to the Hunter's Point near LIC. Door to Door is about 30 minutes door to door, depending upon the wait for the train.
Most (Hicksville) trains commute to the Jamaica station allowing a transfer to Hunter's Point or Long Island City. What I've found is the trains from/to Long Island City / Hunter's Point, don't run as often off peak. This might be worth considering if your husband has irregular hours or overtime requirements.
A backup plan is the IRT 7 line from Woodside which will allow you to connect to the LIRR train from Woodside to Jamaica.
Good Luck on your search
