My husband and I were renting an apt but we recently moved in with my mother to help her out while she was going through various surgeries. We're taking this opportunity to save more money to put down on a house until she's 100% better and ready to go back to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good town to look for a starter home?

We are NOT looking for anything extravagant (in the 200Ks). We just want something to start out and to call our own. A simple 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom in a decent neighborhood with reasonable taxes. We'd prefer a house, but we'd also consider a condo. We don't have children yet, so the school district isn't an issue yet. We probably will start a family in a year or two.

I know this is difficult to find on Long Island, so we figure we'd get an idea now if this is even possible before we discuss other options.

Will be very tough to find a home in the 200K level, maybe able to very far out east in Suffolk. Might be better off looking into Condo/Co-op's.

School district is everything on LI. DOn't buy in a bad school district just because you can.

Condo/co-op def. can be found in that price range, and decent districts too. Try Rockville Centre. (Houses there will be over your range but co-ops should be affordable for you).

APappa, I've sent you information about the very, very confusing geography of Lawn Guyland in a DM.

Where on Long Island do you need to be?

You can find a decent home in Bay Shore schools for mid 200K's-275K. Its a town with alot of potential upswing. Make sure you pick Bay Shore schools and not Brentwood..there are currently 140 homes listed..and some really nice ones!!

If your from the one of the city boroughs and dont mind some road traffic this is a steal...$269K and $7500 taxes. Refer to MLS Number 2217248

You can easily find something in that range in Bellmore, Seaford, Levittown, Hicksville etc.

Just choose Rocky Point now and save yourself reading 3+ pages - lots of debate, but it will all come down to RP, MP, SB.

It might be a big help in getting suggestions if you specified what areas of LI will work for you--Nassau, Western Suffolk, Eastern Suffolk, North Shore, South Shore, etc. Just a thought....

Yeah but if you choose Sound Beach...stay on the Rocky point side. The taxes are much lower.

For what its worth, there are a lot of great 2 br. homes in the 2's.
