How many years is the contract for? Usually they are in increments of 3 -5 years. That may work out to 1% a year. I was just wondering because I didn't see that information posted.
you people are ridiculous...teachers are allowed to make a living too...its ok for the ceo of goldman sach to have a bonus of 25 milllion!!?? But god forbid a teacher gets a raise of 3-5% and all hell brakes loose...give me a freakin break...too bad your property taxes are going up...so are mine....it is what it is..you live on long island, so enjoy the benefits of having some of the best teacher's in the country for your children...im sick and tired of hearing all this negative chatter about long island teachers and how much money they make...we make less than the nassau county and suffolk county police departments, so blame them for your high taxes...and if you really want to place blame, then blame the administrations and superintendents of the school districts..thats where the most money is being spent...dont be bitter because you chose the wrong profession! You're a teacher? For a teacher, you are dumb as a rock and must have failed government/social studies. Have you forgotten that as a public sector employee you are paid by the taxes raised by citizens? Did you ever take an economics course? Private companies make money by selling goods and services for which people pay fees for, in return private entities in the United States are governed by capitalism, not the socialist practices of your government. Perhaps, I should go into teaching so that your students will learn the difference between socialism and capitalism. Best teachers in the country? Talk about a narcissist!

Are you a teacher, and if so, you should be fired if you can not punctuate, capitalize, organize and express your thoughts in a clear fashion. I've highlighted only a few of your errors. No wonder Johnny can't read.

Don't you remember? Most of them paid back all the TARP money. Otherwise they couldn't have gotten away with the huge business-as-usual bonuses.

Capitalism is the fuel of our economy, but Public Schooling is still... much like many government and non-profit organization's programs- socialist in nature.
Much like public libraries. They are supported by a general tax, regardless of any one persons use.
Public schools are of little benefit to the upper-class, utilized primarily by the middle class, and sometimes a source of guardianship and food for the working poor.
Everyone in public schools gets generally the same treatment, the school systems here being so small though obviously differ quite a bit based on the taxable homes in an area- also how many students go to private school can impact taxes vs. usage.
If you don't have children to send to school, or utilize or support the school in your area, it's baffling to me why you would want to live on Long Island. The quality and segregated school districts here seem to be one of the biggest draws of the Island.

The gravy train will end my friend. The only question is when. This "negative chatter" continues to get louder and louder. The politicians will take on your union when they see more and more public outcry. Right now its "elect me and I'll lower your taxes". Soon enough it will be "elect me and I will take on the teacher's unions."
Paying people double or triple their fair market value is just not sustainable. That's the bottom line.
IIRC GS was forced to take that money, they did pay it back.
