Does Newsday still produce the Funbook (not sure of the exact name)? It listed out all the festivals, etc on Long Island - many free events, many cheap, many other things to do. I don't know if there are updated versions, I just know that we have one from years back that's still very helpful.
Just found it online - it's been renamed ExploreLI magazine - Exploreli - Long Island Guides and Trip Activity Recommendations and it's available in printed form to subscribers. "The annual ExploreLI magazine (formerly known as the Fun Book) will be delivered to subscribers only this Sunday, May 23."
Check with some of the school districts and libraries too. The libraries have computer classes, etc... occasionally and alot of schools have sports programs at night too.
beaches (not free), fire island (not free). holtsville zoo is a good idea. the animals look sad but kids don't care. there is a small park there too, so you can easily kill a few hours.
