we once took a one day trip there from Port Judith, RI ... rented mopeds and toured the island. Quite beautiful ,more of a New England feel than Long Island.
Great beaches, a few lighthouses . From Montauk you cannot take a car (it's something like 13 miles and it can get rough) . All the ferries dock in the same place (not too sure of the name - New Harbor ?) and there are quite a few places to eat /places to stay there along with a sizable village .. as I mentioned we did not stay overnight but believe me it looked like the kind of place you could stay for a few days and not get bored.

We've done this trip and found that it was a great mini-vacation as long as the weather was good.

Alot of fun, well worth doing.

The ferry ride can be very rough at times so be prepared.

A great trip, Block Island is full of history, enjoy the day. If you go do go to Ballards.

Definitely worth it. Bring your own bikes if you can to avoid the rental fee. You can take them on the ferry for free or cheap. Lots of people do the mopes, but I think they are overrated. Make sure you get out of town to the more secluded areas of the island. Most stores there can sell you a biking map.
