And to boot 11k in property taxes on top of that? How do you justify that? This is a serious thread. As somebody who may move back to the Island in two years , even though I could comfortably afford to pay that for a home it is still bothering me. We all know the abundance of reasons why people live on LI , BUT HOW DO YOU PERSONALLY JUSTIFY TO YOURSELF PAYING THESE PRICES AND TAXES?

Enough with the whining already.
Buy in or move on.

You want to live in the burbs of the greatest city in the world?
Pay up.

It could always be worse.

I think LI is a steal in comparison to some other desirable areas of the Country.
It is what it is.

Okay, who says "to boot," honestly?

In all seriousness, I am in the market for an actual home (as opposed to a rental), myself, and it boggles the mind, doesn't it?

I can't justify it that is why I moved away. Good luck to you.

Justify or afford?

Where did you move to?

Why.... if you could afford it?

Crooks has it right - it's all about location. And as far as the kitchen goes, well, now's your chance to do it over your way. At least you may be able to get a tax rebate on the high-efficiency appliances.

Both.. Either. I could not afford a 500k home but I did own a small home on LI in a not so nice town. I moved to PA and couldn’t be happier. On LI both my wife and I needed to work to afford what we had. I wanted my wife to be able to stay home and take care of our child and in PA I'm able to do that. In PA I had a house built that is twice the size of my old house and cost less. LI is a great place to live and I do miss it but there are other nice places to live that cost a whole lot less. If you can afford a 500k house and have 50k to fix it up than more power to you.

Redwood City is Climate Best, by Government Test!

Go Ravens!

... but in all seriousness to the OP- LI is a rip off.

It's a great place to live, minus the price-tag, and since that's the factor in this case... it isn't really a great place to live.

The prices are justified by no-new development, and a decent sized part of the population making big bucks to pay for the real estate.

Expect house prices to continue to drop over the years, though taxes will continue to rise.

I'm not sure what you miss about it here, i'd gather that's personal. To me, you've seen one set of strip malls and crowded beaches you've seen them all. However if you do miss it a lot, the premium of home ownership may be worth it to you.

Good choice, schools can be iffy but do you still come back/commute?

I visit LI about once a month, all of my family is there. As for all schools in PA I cannot speak but my district is great.
