Wow, what a heartwarming post! I hardly know where to begin.

Actually, the OP wasn't complaining about traffic. He was complaining about a *lack* of public transportation.

It is also WIDELY known that the media exaggerates, and rumors and blogs take it up from there. Do you also believe that you'll automatically get the middle finger and then get raped and killed if you ask for directions in New York, that no Southerner gets past an eighth grade education, that girls in California are all five foot ten and a hundred pounds and ride their rollerblades giggling to work every day, and that Santa Claus will come if you're nice instead of naughty?

For the record, I don't recall a single person here, including the OP, saying he or she though the bus system would be the same as New York's.

No, it shows that everyone has his or her reasons. The OP is a kid and had to move with his family. We moved in an attempt to improve our son's health. People have their reasons, and it's not that we're all rushing will-nilly to the west coast on a mad-dash ride toward a place we've barely even heard of.

Oh now why didn't I think of that?? (slapping forehead) Damn! I mean I for one just yanked my kids by their arms, threw them onto a plane without discovering its destination first and then casually asked the stewardess, "Where are we going?" Then arrived here and said, "WHAT? California?" I mean didn't all of you? Yes, dear. That's sarcasm.

I can see that moving out west has mellowed you considerably.

I agree with you, Eric. I'm thinking of you and hoping you feel better about everything soon.

I am sorry for not clarifying, but my post was not really geared toward the OP. The OP is 20 years old, which is definitely of age to go wherever he pleases. However, much of my frustration was geared toward other posts expressing displeasure at the bus system out here, and the change in lifestyle. Of course the bus system is horrible out here. Anyone with eyes can look online, read reviews about LA, and discover that. Yes, JerZ, that is a sign of ignorance to believe that LA is going to be anything like New York. If ANYONE did the slightest bit of research on this before moving, they would know beforehand that LA is significantly different from NY. It is part of the poor geography education that many Americans receive, leading them to believe that all parts of the United States are the same.

Although the media does exaggerate, it doesn't take much research either to find out that traffic is horrible here, and that ::gasp:: some people develop road rage. No, people generally don't believe that Southerners don't go past the eighth grade, or that all New Yorkers have a proclivity toward violent crime. HOWEVER, educational attainment is lower in the South than anywhere in the country, and many New Yorkers do have attitude issues. Freeway shootings should at least lead people to infer that driving is stressful in LA. I guess everyone doesn't have the ability to infer information.

I am a mellow person; however, I can't relax ignore the extreme ignorance that seems posters on the board have. You make all East Coasters look narrow-minded, which is not the case.

It's already up & running. It's called "Orange County; Depressingly Boring" and you'll find many of the gripes there apply just as well to LA.

OMG!! LOL!!!!!! Okay...I don't feel like anywhere NEAR as much a complainer as I did before. "Anus of the world?" No matter how much one might love Cali, you've just gotta laugh at that. I don't think I've ever looked at a post with the word "anus" in it. Hmmm. Oh, this will be entertaining, I'm bookmarking these threads for later.

You live in a metropolitan area with 19 million people and you're surprised that there's traffic?! It shows irresponsibility on your part to move to a different part of the country and not know what you're in for. That's like me moving to Phoenix and expressing shock over the heat, or the lack of rain.

I suggest that before you move across the country you truly investigate the environment that your moving to, so that there aren't any unpleasant surprises.

If you can't handle LA, why don't you just go back home? Please remember why you moved out here in the first place. The grass is always greener on the other side for some people. You'll just never be content where you are.
I found your post to be unbelievably nasty, condescending and judgmental. Do you honestly think I woke up one morning and said, gee I think I'll move to LA because it looks so nice on TV and in movies?? You don't know my situation or anyone else's on this board and maybe you should think twice before making assumptions about people.

I'd been thinking about trying LA for a while and visited it several times in the year prior to moving. What made me finally move out here? Well, for starters, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job. When I received an offer in LA, I thought I owed it to myself to at least give it a try. I don't think that shows irresponsibility on my part. I did what I had to do at the time.

As for the traffic, of course I'd heard horror stories, though the times that I came to visit, it honestly didn't seem so bad. It wasn't until I started commuting on a daily basis that I began to understand just how horrible it was.

And btw, it's not a matter of not being able to "handle LA". I could learn to put up with traffic if I had enough of a reason to stay here. But my family and friends are on the east coast and I miss them. That's the main reason I want to go back home.

I don't appreciate you calling me or anyone else on this board irresponsible. Not sure who the hell you think you are, but it's extremely rude of you to join this thread just to put other people down. Do you seriously have nothing better to do with your time?

I wonder if you read my posts at all. I definitely have not said that be are ignorant for moving to LA. Never once did I say that. I said that people who move to LA and express surprise at commonly known facts about LA are irresponsible and ignorant. I would certainly hope that you didn't move to LA based on what you saw in a movie, and I did not imply anywhere that you, or anyone else, did. You still made a conscious decision to move to LA when you were laid off, so that should provide no reasoning to your lack of preparation for what was in store. "Oh, my god, I didn't know LA has earthquakes!!" or "Wow, I thought the water was going to be warmer!!" This is all information you could have found out beforehand, instead of coming on a MB and expressing surprise and regret.

For your information I moved out here in 2003 and did perform research an ENTIRE A YEAR before that. People lie to you here about every damn thing!

I had employment agencies and one of my sister's very best friends tell me that I would be able to get a job EASILY in LA due to my strong legal secretarial background. Well guess what?? No freakin permanent job, just temp stuff. Luckily, I had a year and a half long-term position that held me for awhile and I saw plenty of people get hired at that place BECAUSE THEY KNEW SOMEONE! I also read that LA had the third largest public transportation in the country, so I ass-u-me-d it would be pretty decent. I was wrong. And if you read LA's metro ads they're billing it as "America's best" or some *ish.

You have no idea what the OP or any of us other NYers or east coast people are going through, because we can't believe how freakin THIRD WORLD and COUNTRY Los Angeles REALLY is. And by third world I'm not talking about latinos (which seems to be a running them by natural LAers on the board), but just how everything is NON-CITY like. Even in NY's "suburbiest" suburbs you can still find a decent chinese restaurant and pizza shop! Again, you wouldn't understand, because YOU'RE NOT FROM NY/NJ like the rest of us.

Next time keep your comments to yourself. The OP wasn't talking to you in the first place. She was talking to other east coasters (NYers) that feels the way she does.

Oh yeah, and what you consider "rudeness" in New York are just people giving it to you straight and not beating around the bush like they do in LA. We don't shy away from confrontation either in person or on a messageboard.
