Can anyone tell me anything about Palmdale? Why are there so many vacant homes for sale up there? Too uncommutable? Becoming a ghost town?

Housing bubble got tons of people into homes they couldn't afford with commutes they couldn't tolerate to jobs they no longer have.

Palmdale is cheap. The exurbs always fail first in a downturn.
Jobs are not as plentiful up there as they used to be and commuters
are now paying a lot more for gas.

It is a good place to invest in rental property, tho. :-)

Thanks, everyone.... my DH was really excited because he saw so many nice houses for sale up that way, but there's no way he's going to commute to Downey from there daily. I had to take him up there to show him how far it was... and how windy it is.

Yes, a commute to Downey would require a word that went beyond "insane".

A colleague of mine in Huntsville used to live in Leona Valley, just in the foothills south of Palmdale (essentially Palmdale). He commuted to Huntington Beach daily for five years.

So basically he lived his waking life on the freeway. I used to have an 160 mile round trip commute for several years and if you have to do it, you have to do it. But looking back on it . It wasn't worth it

When you factor in time away from the family, wear and tear on your vehicle and the unpredictable (car repair/maintenance, gas prices) it wasn't worth it.

Another thing to consider is that a lot of Freeways around Calif. have road work/Cal trans projects that never stay on schedule, last for years causing even more commute/traffic problems and stress that you might not have planned for.
