Hello!
I'm new to LA and I found a clean, cheap place to rent in the Atwater neighborhood. 33xx and Glenhurst to be exact.

What's the area like? Is it safe? Are there things to do? I'll be working downtown at the Staples Center, will the commute be rough?

Also, I walked the neighborhood a bit last night. As a 20something, is there stuff to do there on the weekends?

Any info would help, thanks!

Lots of "hipsters" in Atwater. There are a few good bars and you're a close drive to the nightlife in Los Feliz/Hollywood. Shopping wise, you're near a costco, and all that Glendale has to offer (Americana, Glendale Galleria mall, Target, Trader Joes, etc.)

Your commute will depend on what hour you're hitting the 5. But it shouldn't be brutal, since you're pretty close to downtown.

Atwater Village was a traditional L.A. working class neighborhood with the ethnic mixtures of traditional L.A. working class neighborhoods but unfortunately in the 1980s developed extremely serious problems with very public and open drug dealing, and all the problems relating to that including gang issues, and for that reason was off of peoples' radar for a long time. In the '80s and early '90s it was regarded as a dangerous hood. However, it got better once the Armenians started moving in (there had long been SOME there, but more came in during the '90s, and they influenced the area for the better) and the LAPD were able to crack down on the drug and gang activity. The hipsters followed the Armenians, noting the proximity to Silver Lake and Los Feliz but lower rents because of the bad rep the neighborhood acquired. Today it is a very safe neighborhood with little sign of its former troubles and low violent crime. Property crime esp. auto break ins are an issue like everywhere in L.A., but the level of property crime in Atwater is no higher than that of Brentwood....

Awesome info, thanks! Is Atwater Village actually in the city of Glendale, or is Atwater a city itself?

AV is part of L.A. City. It's considered a neighborhood.
