Be sure to look at the whole thing, as it's not sorted by salary:

How do I apply to be a Mayoral Aide VIII?!

Villaraigosa does not set city salaries. Today's LA Times list the salaries of city officials and the mayor is around $240,000 which is comparable to other large cities. What's interesting is that the city of Bell finally released the salaries of other city officials and several more where over $400,000 Unbelievably high for a small city and more info on the scandal.

Especially in L.A. The city parallel of what I did for the state with 25 years of experience pays almost twice as much. No wonder the city's broke!

It shouldn't be shocking as the Times has often printed the salaries of the Mayor, City Council, LAPD Chief, LA Sherrif, MTA CEO, among others. People in LA aren't outraged the the MTA CEO or the Sherrif or LAPD Chief earn well over 200,000 per year. They are tough jobs, overseeing and managing huge agencies, with ten-of-thousands of employees and must be accessible to the media and submit to interviews with, sometimes tough questions or embarrassing mistakes or failure in policy that they must answer for and implement changes to prevent it from occurring again.

Bill Bratton was worth every penny of his over nearly quarter million dollar annual salary, and so is Bacca who earn OVER a quarter million a year, who has made tremendous change in the Sheriff's department that is actually now popular in West Hollywood, and must deal with court mandates regarding jail (the largest jail system in the world) overcrowding that aren't his fault. Same for the MTA CEO's at about $310,000 (however his $309,000 at OCTA is an example of too high a salary. The OCTA is hardly the challenge the LACMTA is). All these guys can earn more in private industry. In fact, Bill Bratton will be making a whole lot more at his new private industry job, so large governments do have to offer a lot of money in salary to those folks, if we want the talent. Actually the DWP and Department of Airports and the LA Harbor are well run agencies (not going broke anytime soon--perhaps those departments make too much money?) who pay their top execs well over $300,000 per year. The price of obtaining the best talent to run crucial large city and county agencies who can easily earn more in the private sector.

The outrage is how the economically poor residents have to pay their taxes to people who earn up to $800,000 and do comparatively nothing to their counterparts in much larger cities.

If everybody's doing such a fine job, why is this city such a dump lately? Can anybody honestly compare this place to what it was like in, say, the 1960's and believe the government is doing a good job running this place?

I guess you could ask the same question of every large and not so large city in America since the global recession started a few years ago. Or do you actually go to libraries? [since they are closed more days than they are open].

Sadly, I read recently that libraries around the nation are being shut or dramatically cut back. But the age of books just like newspapers is coming to an end so I guess that libraries would logically be one of the first institutions to go during bad economic times.
