Try to stay near Wilshire Avenue/Vermont (North of Wilshire side). Anywhere in walking distance to the subway, ralph/vons supermarkets, walgreens, rite aid, etc.

I also heard Wilshire/Western area is pretty decent now too. More "americans" living around that way. Either way you can't go wrong. You'll be by the best buses in the city. The Metro rapid 720, super express 920, 20 can connect you to all other major buses to take you anywhere in the city you need to go.

The only thing I hate about many of the buildings in this area compared to the Valley is that the apartments don't come with air conditioners.

If you can spend this amount on rent, why don't you move to the Miracle Mile area on Wilshire? Those apartments cost more, but are way nicer.

I looked briefly at the Miracle Mile. Two things. It is far from the freeway. I also couldn't really find any apartments within my price range. Any suggestions?

Miracle Mile area is GREAT. But your observation about the distance to the freeway is very true.

Nothing wrong with Los Feliz, Hollywood (central, not east), K-Town, or even Downtown LA.

I do like the urban nature of the Miracle Mile though. It seems everything is a tiny $750 studio there or a $1700 one bedroom.

I agree...the Miralce Mile area is one of my favorite neighborhoods of LA.

You are probably right about the rents but here's is a decent looking 1 Bdrm for $1,250/month. Not located in the CENTER of the MM along wilshrie but still a good location.

i live in ktown near western/wilshire. id recommend going west of vermont and staying north of venice. those areas are pretty ghetto. miracle mile is great, you still have access to the 10 freeway pretty easy. id check things out from miracle mile to western/wilshire.

I vote for the Miracle Mile. BUT if you go there, get a place with parking. Even if it's $100 more a month. Parking is terrible in that area. I know it well. Here's a place--for example--in your price range that is within a half a block of Wilshire and has parking. 1BD APT. HARWOOD FLOORS, PETS OK! That is an EXCELLENT location....as good as it gets in my opinion. The building doesn't look like anything special, esp. when you compare it to the 1920's/1930's gems in that neighborhood. But the inside of the unit looks decent enough.

Thanks a lot for everyone's help! Hopefully a friend can make the drive from Wilshire and Cochran to the 10 and let me know how long it takes.
