I would look along the Red Line http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bu...images/802.pdf

I have a feeling it will provide connections to some key places for you including Universal Studios, Downtown Los Angeles, and of course, Hollywood. It is an efficient system.

i would look in silverlake, round the virgil village area. its the backside of silverlake and not terribly fantastic. but its close to hollywood.
avoid "north hollywood". its in the valley. i guess as the crow flies its north of hollywood, but.......
you do need to give more info as to where you will be working, and "not far" from hollywood- how far is too far?
Why avoid the valley in general and specifically North Hollywood? There are decent priced apts in good areas in North Hollywood that follow along the orange line (which lead to the redline station) like the ones on Chandler in the 91601 zip code. Plus it's just as close to Hollywood as Los Feliz but has better access to public transportation.

Hollywood proper, (a district of the City of Los Angeles) was the original location for the old radio and TV networks, no longer has a single radio station nor TV station. I believe the last radio station was KNX that left about 3 years ago, and KCBS finally left for North Hollywood about 2 years ago.
KTLA is still in Hollywood.

If you're gonna live in Hollywood you can do a studio, in a good part of Hollywood, for $1000. HOWEVER I would highly suggest you don't bring your car. Driving in Hollywood is awful and getting worse every day. AND, the best thing about Hollywood, you don't NEED to drive. Hollywood is one of the few places in the city that has usable public transit. We have a number of buses and the Red Line Subway.

I moved here and got rid of my car and haven't had any problems.

However, don't get an apartment here without checking it out. Hollywood can change quickly street by street. Apartments can also be different on the same street. But a lot of areas of Hollywood have been gentrified and are completely safe places now.

Remember to keep checking Craigslist, since the best apartments might only last a few hours online. You might even be able to find a studio closer to Santa Monica for your budget, just not near the beach. Best of luck in your search!

Rent prices are coming down. I am in Studio City with a car, near Vineland and Ventura. Close to Hollywood, studios in Burbank/Glendale & over the hills into WeHo and Beverly Hills. Tujunga Ave., has some very nice apartments between Ventura & Moorpark in your price range too. Good luck!

Huh? Have you ever been to Texas? I've never had this problem in Texas no matter where I lived.
