You'd panic too if you were out on the roads during the first rainfall in 7 or 8 months.

I wouldn't say they panic.

During rain, I see pretty much the same thing as I see with sunny weather... people driving to work on the freeways or streets, driving to the bank or supermarket, etc.

The traffic is worse when it rains which is why some people don't like to drive in the rain.

i honestly think the media blows the whole "driving in the rain" thing out of proportion. it is true that it doesn't rain here very often, but anyone who has lived here has driven in the rain and should know how adjust their driving habits. i've never met a person who was panicked or freaked out because they had to drive in the rain. as fleet mentioned, people go about their normal routine in the rain, most even drive a bit slower.

as for weather and driving, we should be happy that on hot days like yesterday that our roads don't melt like over in europe. when it get's hot, the asphalt literally begins to melt. i'm not quite sure why, but if you watch old highlights of the tour de france, there have been some nasty accidents because of melted asphalt.

I remember one horrible heat wave in late Sept, either 1964 or maybe 63. Anyway they actually closed the Los Angeles schools. I remember because we went to a Dodger game that year and our regular baby sitter was able to sit for the kids on a school night cause there was no school the next day. I don't remember how hot it was.

Here yesterday the high was 66 and the low 44 after we have had a record breaking dry and hot summer. I guess you are now getting what we had for 2 months. No, it wasn't 113, but it was day in and day out above 95.

Hope things cool off for all of you in the next day or so.

Nita

The only time I panicked due to rain was back in the day when I had a real POS car, I got on the freeway a downpour started and when I cracked the windshield vipers the freaking things flew right off!
So, yeah, I panicked a bit! I had to drive like Ace Venture with my head sticking out from the side window.

The only real problem with snow/rain where either is not common is, people do not realize they need to leave some extra distance between them and the car in front and also drive slower, etc. What could be causing panic with people is that some people continue to drive as usual in those weather conditions which is not prudent to say the least.

That is insane! I heard it reached 115 in other areas of L.A.

Here in SD, it got really hot as well, we broke a lot of records too!

Today, it is overcast and cool, with a nice breeze. It feels like a tropical storm

Though humid, it was more comfortable to me today. Only 99F downtown compared to yesterday. More cooling into the week!

Thanks, nmnita.
It did cool off. Only 93 degrees where I live today; it was 106 degrees yesterday.

When I think about it, it is just amazing in a way to hear about Downtown being that hot! Wow! And it is not even July or August either. It was 109F in Glendale yesterday. Even though I am getting acclimated to the heat, it was HOT even for me. It reminded me of my summer visits to Las Vegas years ago. It was like a blast furnace out there. It was some of the hottest air I've ever felt hit my face in years. Having said that, I'll put up with 109F and dry over 95F and humid. It is still going to be in the 90s for the rest of the week so there is no real cool down yet. And this is LA so anything can happen.
